Louet S10 Concept: Who It Suits and How to Set It Up
The short answer: is the S10 Concept right for you?
The S10 Concept suits a spinner who wants to choose her own setup: Scotch or Irish tension, and one treadle or two. Louet’s ratios run from 1:5.5 to 1:19, depending on the tension you pick.
The closest wheels to compare are the Ashford Kiwi 3 and the Kromski Sonata, each with two treadles and Scotch tension.
The price depends on the setup you choose. A Louet dealer can quote the tension and treadle you want, and tell you the weight of that setup. Start with Louet’s S10 Concept page.
How to set it up
Scotch or Irish tension. Louet lets you choose, and a dealer can show you both. Here’s what changes:
| Scotch tension | Irish tension | |
|---|---|---|
| Orifice | 12 mm and 8 mm | 13 mm |
| Ratios | 1:6 / 1:8.5 / 1:12.5 / 1:19 | 1:5.5 / 1:7.5 / 1:10.5 |
| Bobbin volume | 393 cm³ | 670 cm³ |
Louet’s pages: S10 Concept Scotch tension and Irish tension.
- For finer yarn, the Scotch setup reaches 1:19 and has an 8 mm orifice as well as the 12 mm.
- For thicker yarn and more of it on a bobbin, the Irish setup has the 13 mm orifice and the larger bobbin, with ratios close to the Kiwi 3’s.
One treadle or two. Louet lists both, so choose what suits your feet.
What comes with it. Louet’s Scotch tension page lists a flyer, a lazy kate and three bobbins. Ask your dealer what comes with the Irish setup.
Who it suits
- A new spinner starting on medium wool. The lower ratios on either setup are the place to begin: 1:6 and 1:8.5, or 1:5.5 and 1:7.5.
- A spinner who wants to go finer later. The Scotch setup reaches 1:19. The Sonata’s additional ratios reach further, to 20 and 22:1, and the Kiwi 3 stops at 9.5.
- A spinner who knows which treadle she likes. The Kiwi 3 and Sonata both have two.
Look elsewhere if
You’d rather not choose a tension and a treadle. The Kiwi 3 and the Sonata each have two treadles and Scotch tension. The Kiwi 3 weighs 5.5 kg, with a 45 cm wheel and a 69 cm orifice height. The Sonata weighs 5 kg, with a 50 cm wheel.

A dealer’s notes
Jill Nickolene Sanders, who also sells Louet wheels, wrote up the double-treadle S10C when it came out in 2015. Hers assembled in 21 minutes with the included tools and came in at 11 lb on her shipping scale.
